الرحمن

Ar-Rahman

The Most Gracious

Meaning

Ar-Rahman refers to the vastness of Allah's mercy that encompasses everything in existence. Unlike Ar-Raheem which is specific mercy for believers, Ar-Rahman is universal — it covers every creature, every atom, from the beginning of creation until its end. The rain that falls, the air we breathe, the food that grows — all are manifestations of Ar-Rahman. This name appears at the start of every surah in the Basmala, reminding us that every action should begin with awareness of His all-encompassing grace. Even those who deny Him still receive from His mercy, for Ar-Rahman withholds sustenance from no one.

In the Quran

Surah Ar-Rahman (55:1-4): "The Most Gracious. He taught the Quran. He created man. He taught him eloquence."

Daily Reflection

When was the last time you noticed a mercy from Allah that you have been taking for granted? The ability to see, to hear, to breathe freely — each is a gift from Ar-Rahman.

Today's Action

Show mercy to someone today — forgive a mistake, help a stranger, or be gentle with someone who frustrates you. Reflect His name through your actions.
