العليم
Al-'Alim
The All-Knowing
Meaning
Al-'Alim possesses complete and perfect knowledge of all things — past, present, and future; seen and unseen; spoken and concealed. His knowledge encompasses every atom in the universe, every thought in every mind, every secret in every heart. Nothing is hidden from Him. He knows what the wombs carry, what the earth swallows, and what the heavens contain. His knowledge is not acquired through learning — it is inherent, eternal, and infinite. This name both comforts and warns: it comforts because He knows your struggles even when you cannot articulate them, and it warns because He knows your hidden intentions as clearly as your outward actions.
In the Quran
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:29): "It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth. Then He directed Himself to the heaven and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things."
Daily Reflection
If Al-'Alim already knows everything in your heart, why do you hide your true feelings from Him in du'a? Pour out your heart — He already knows.
