الحميد
Al-Hamid
The Praiseworthy
Meaning
Al-Hamid is the One who is inherently praiseworthy in His essence, attributes, and actions. He deserves all praise regardless of whether anyone praises Him. Unlike creation that earns praise through specific actions, Al-Hamid is praiseworthy by nature — every aspect of His being merits praise. His mercy is praiseworthy, His justice is praiseworthy, His wisdom is praiseworthy, even His tests are praiseworthy. The phrase "Alhamdulillah" acknowledges this — all praise belongs to Allah, not because we choose to praise Him, but because He inherently deserves it. When we praise Him, it benefits us, not Him. His praiseworthiness is independent of our recognition, as the sun shines whether or not we acknowledge its light.
In the Quran
Surah Ibrahim (14:1): "A Book which We have revealed to you that you might bring mankind out of darkness into the light by permission of their Lord — to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy (Al-Hamid)."
