المميت
Al-Mumit
The Creator of Death
Meaning
Al-Mumit is the One who creates death. In Islam, death is not an absence but a creation — Allah created death just as He created life, both as tests. Death is the great equalizer that humbles every king, ends every empire, and brings every soul to its appointment with its Creator. Al-Mumit does not create death as cruelty but as mercy — for without death, the oppressor would oppress forever, the suffering would suffer endlessly, and the soul would never meet its Lord. Death is the door to the next life, the bridge between the temporary and the eternal. Remembering death is a virtue in Islam, for it puts worldly pursuits in perspective and motivates us to prepare for what comes after.
In the Quran
Surah Al-Mulk (67:2): "He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed — and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving."
Daily Reflection
If you knew you had one day left to live, what would you do differently? Al-Mumit reminds us that time is limited. Are you living as if each day could be your last?
Today's Action
Remember death today. Visit a graveyard, write your will if you have not, or simply reflect on the brevity of life. Let this remembrance motivate you to make every moment count.
Dhikr
يا محيي يا مميت (Ya Muhyi, Ya Mumit)
Say them together 100 times, contemplating the cycle of life and death.
Dua
اللهم يا مميت أحسن خاتمتنا ولا تقبض أرواحنا إلا وأنت راضٍ عنا
O Allah, the Creator of Death, make our ending good and do not take our souls except while You are pleased with us.
