Al-Kabir

The Greatest

Meaning

Al-Kabir is the One who is incomparably great — greater than all of creation, greater than all perception, greater than all description. When we say "Allahu Akbar" (God is the Greatest), we invoke this meaning: that Allah is greater than whatever you are facing, greater than whatever you fear, greater than whatever distracts you from Him. This takbir opens our prayer because entering conversation with Al-Kabir should remind us that nothing else in our life compares to Him. He is greater than your problems, greater than your oppressors, greater than your desires, and greater than your understanding. Nothing in existence is kabir (great) compared to Him.

In the Quran

Surah Luqman (31:30): "That is because Allah is the Truth, and that what they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Grand (Al-Kabir)."

Daily Reflection

When you say "Allahu Akbar" in prayer, do you truly feel that Allah is greater than whatever is on your mind? What currently feels bigger than Him in your heart?

Today's Action

Say "Allahu Akbar" with full consciousness today. Every time you transition in prayer, remind yourself that Allah is greater than your worries, your desires, and your distractions.

Dhikr

الله أكبر (Allahu Akbar)

Say it 100 times throughout the day, each time comparing His greatness to something in your life.

Dua

اللهم يا كبير كبّر همتي في طاعتك وصغّر الدنيا في عيني

O Allah, the Greatest, make my aspiration for Your obedience great and make the world small in my eyes.
