القيوم
Al-Qayyum
The Self-Subsisting
Meaning
Al-Qayyum is the One who sustains and maintains all of existence. He stands alone (qaim) without any need for support, while everything else depends entirely on Him. He sustains the heavens without pillars, keeps the planets in their orbits, maintains the laws of physics, and holds every atom in its place. Without Al-Qayyum, the universe would collapse in an instant. He is self-sufficient — needing nothing from His creation — while all creation is utterly dependent on Him. This name, combined with Al-Hayy, forms what many scholars consider the "Greatest Name of Allah" (Ism Allah al-A'zam). Together they declare: He lives forever and sustains everything. What more could you need from a Lord?
In the Quran
Surah Aal-Imran (3:2): "Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence (Al-Qayyum)."
Daily Reflection
What would happen if Allah withdrew His sustaining power for even a second? Everything would cease to exist. How does this dependence on Al-Qayyum shape your gratitude?
Today's Action
Acknowledge your complete dependence on Al-Qayyum today. In every task, recognize that your ability to do it comes from Him — your strength, your intelligence, your very existence.
Dhikr
يا قيوم (Ya Qayyum)
Say it 100 times, acknowledging Allah as the one who sustains your entire existence.
Dua
اللهم يا قيوم أقمني على صراطك المستقيم ولا تكلني إلى نفسي
O Allah, the Self-Subsisting, establish me on Your straight path and do not leave me to myself.
