الضار

Ad-Darr

The Distresser

Meaning

Ad-Darr is the One who creates distress and harm as a test, purification, or consequence. This name is always understood alongside An-Nafi' (The Propitious) — together they affirm that both harm and benefit come from Allah alone. No one can harm you except by His permission, and no one can benefit you except by His will. The harm that reaches us serves divine purposes: it expiates sins, elevates ranks, builds character, and drives us back to Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that no fatigue, illness, worry, or distress befalls a Muslim except that it expiates some of their sins — even the prick of a thorn. Understanding this name prevents us from blaming creation for our difficulties and directs our focus to the true Source of all events.

In the Quran

Surah Yunus (10:107): "And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He intends for you good, then there is no repeller of His bounty."

Daily Reflection

When distress reaches you, do you blame people and circumstances? Or do you recognize that Ad-Darr has permitted it for a purpose only He understands?

Today's Action

Reframe one difficulty in your life today. Instead of seeing it as punishment, see it as purification. Instead of asking "why me?", ask "what is this teaching me?"

Dhikr

يا نافع يا ضار (Ya Nafi', Ya Darr)

Say them together 100 times, acknowledging that both benefit and harm are from Allah alone.

Dua

اللهم يا ضار يا نافع لا تمسنا بضر ولا تحرمنا من نفعك

O Allah, the Distresser, the Propitious, do not touch us with harm and do not deprive us of Your benefit.
