الصمد

As-Samad

The Eternal

Meaning

As-Samad is the One to whom all creation turns in need, while He Himself needs nothing and no one. He is the Eternal Refuge — the One everyone depends on but who depends on none. He is solid, complete, and self-sufficient in every way. He does not eat, does not drink, does not sleep, does not tire, and has no needs whatsoever. Yet every creature in existence turns to Him in need — from the smallest bacterium to the mightiest angel, all depend on As-Samad. This name appears in Surah Al-Ikhlas, which defines the essence of Allah. Understanding As-Samad transforms your relationship with Him: you bring nothing He needs, yet He provides everything you need. You are the beggar; He is the King who loves to give.

In the Quran

Surah Al-Ikhlas (112:2): "Allah, the Eternal Refuge (As-Samad)."

Daily Reflection

Who do you turn to first when you are in need? As-Samad is the ultimate refuge that never disappoints. Are you making Him your first resort or your last?

Today's Action

Turn to As-Samad with one need today before turning to any human. Make du'a first, then take worldly means. Reverse the order if you have been doing it backwards.

Dhikr

يا صمد (Ya Samad)

Say it 100 times, acknowledging that Allah needs nothing while you need everything from Him.

Dua

اللهم يا صمد أنت المقصود في كل حاجة فاقضِ حوائجنا

O Allah, the Eternal, You are the one sought for every need, so fulfill our needs.
