البر
Al-Barr
The Source of Goodness
Meaning
Al-Barr is the source of all goodness, kindness, and righteousness. Every good thing in existence originates from Him. He is good to His creation in ways they know and ways they do not — in blessings they see and blessings hidden from their sight. His goodness is not contingent on our behavior; He continues to be good to those who obey and those who disobey. He is good when He gives and good when He withholds, good when He eases and good when He tests. The root "birr" in Arabic refers to expansive goodness and righteousness. It is the same word used for the goodness children show to their parents (birrul-walidayn) — except Al-Barr's goodness to us is infinitely greater than any parent's goodness to their child.
In the Quran
Surah At-Tur (52:28): "Indeed, we used to supplicate Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Good (Al-Barr), the Merciful."
Daily Reflection
How much of your life is filled with Allah's goodness that you do not even notice? Your morning coffee, your safe home, your functioning body — each is birr from Al-Barr.
Today's Action
Spread goodness today in every interaction. Be good to your parents, good to your neighbors, good to strangers. Let the goodness of Al-Barr flow through you to others.
Dhikr
يا بر (Ya Barr)
Say it 100 times, reflecting on the endless goodness Allah has shown you.
Dua
اللهم يا بر ألهمنا البر والتقوى واجعلنا من الأبرار
O Allah, the Source of Goodness, inspire us with righteousness and piety and make us among the righteous.
