ذو الجلال والإكرام
Dhul-Jalal-wal-Ikram
Lord of Majesty and Generosity
Meaning
Dhul-Jalal-wal-Ikram combines two supreme attributes: Jalal (Majesty) and Ikram (Generosity/Honor). This name encompasses the totality of Allah's perfection — His awe-inspiring greatness and His overwhelming generosity. He is majestic enough to inspire fear and generous enough to inspire hope. The balance between these two is the essence of a believer's heart: living between hope in His generosity and awe of His majesty. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to persist in asking by this name: "Ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram." It appears at the end of Surah Ar-Rahman, after Allah has enumerated countless blessings and asked "Which of your Lord's favors will you deny?" The answer: He is Lord of Majesty and Generosity — deny none of it.
In the Quran
Surah Ar-Rahman (55:78): "Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor (Dhul-Jalal-wal-Ikram)."
