الغني

Al-Ghani

The Self-Sufficient

Meaning

Al-Ghani is the One who is absolutely self-sufficient, needing nothing from anyone or anything. He does not need our worship, our obedience, or our gratitude — He is complete without any of it. If every human on earth were to worship Him perfectly, it would not increase His dominion by an atom. If everyone were to disbelieve, it would not diminish Him in the slightest. His creation exists not because He needed it but because He chose it. This is liberating: our worship is not for His benefit but for ours. When we pray, we need the prayer more than He needs our prostration. When we give charity, we need the purification more than He needs our wealth. He gives from His richness to our poverty.

In the Quran

Surah Fatir (35:15): "O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need (Al-Ghani), the Praiseworthy."

Daily Reflection

You need Allah for everything; He needs you for nothing. Yet He still gives you, provides for you, and cares for you. What does this tell you about His generosity?

Today's Action

Acknowledge your neediness to Allah today. In your du'a, express your poverty before His richness, your weakness before His strength, your ignorance before His knowledge.

Dhikr

يا غني (Ya Ghani)

Say it 100 times, acknowledging that all richness belongs to Allah.

Dua

اللهم يا غني أغننا بحلالك عن حرامك وبفضلك عمن سواك

O Allah, the Self-Sufficient, enrich us with Your halal over Your haram and with Your bounty over anyone besides You.
